Hey Minimalist Girl, Not FAT related, but I have a fetish for minimalist approaches to life, discovered your website, and thought I’d throw in my two cents on what I saw here. From the outset, I applaud you for getting out of debt, and choosing to consume less. However, I’m not sure if your situation is really something that the majority can really relate to. I read in some post that when you work you can pull in $10K to $15K a month. Congratulations, that is awesome, particularly for someone in their 20s, but how many are in that position? When you’re privileged, you can chose to live any lifestyle you want.
I remember there was some internet personality by the name of Timothy Ferris who extolled the virtues of a a four hour work week which is fine and dandy when your snake oil supplement is bringing you in tens of thousands a month. But not so relevant for the rest of us. My point here is that when you can just choose to work, and make a load of money, your minimalist philosophy is a choice that owes it’s existence to privilege. And as you speak from a position of privilege, it only serves to undermine your message. It almost comes across as a Paris Hilton “Simple Life” episode. The young girl who can live lightly in a cluttered, ugly world because well she’s privileged. Most aren’t in your shoes.

Anyway, it’s a nice website. I just think you are speaking from a social class that not many are part of. My impressions only, and if I’m the only one to mention this, I can/should be ignored. If others have commented similar thoughts, then perhaps my views have some merit. Best, Joe Average. This is straight up Bad Advice.
FAT32 is not only antiquated, but has serious data transfer issues as Frank and Annie (but not the original article) both mentioned. Speed and file size should both weigh heavily in this analysis, not just perceived filesystem compatibility. Formatting a large HDD with FAT32 is a terrible idea. A better approach would be to consider which OS you are using most frequently, and choose your filesystem accordingly.
All data has to be put in a file format that the operating system can read off the hard drive. OS X uses a file format called HFS+ to write its data. Windows can't read or write HFS+ data natively.
Then research solutions for extending fs compatibility on your other platforms.
